* تحميل الصور

* ويمكن تحميل الصور من الكاميرا إلى موقع «فليكر»، أو «كوداك غاليري»، أو «فوتوباكيت»، أو «سنابفيش»، أو حتى إلى ألبوم موجود على «تي ـ موبايل دوت كوم». لكنني وجدت صعوبة في تحويل الصور إلى الكومبيوتر عبر «يو إس بي»، ففي البداية لم يتعرف جهاز الـ«بي سي» بتاتا على «يو إس بي»؛ لكون وصلة «بلوتوث» اللاسلكية في الكاميرا كانت مفتوحة وشغالة. وبعد فترة ظلت الصور لا تظهر على جهاز «بي سي» لأنه توجب عليّ نسخها يدويا على بطاقة «إس دي» الصغيرة سعة 1 غيغابايت، التي تأتي مع الكاميرا ـ الهاتف، والتي احتاجت إلى صياغتها داخل الكاميرا. لقد كانت مهمة شاقة! وعن طريق استخدام «جي بي إس سمارت» الخاص بـ«ميموار»، يمكن تحلية الصور حيث التقطت، بأسماء مواقعها الجغرافية، كما يمكن استخدام «جي بي إس» للحصول على الاتجاهات منعطفا منعطفا عن طريق اشتراك شهري قدره 10 دولارات مع «تيلي ناف».

The recently-launched World Digital Library is a huge collection of free primary material aiming to promote international and intercultural understanding. The site is operated by UNESCO and the United States Library of Congress, and as well as going some way to expanding non-English and non-western content on the Internet, it will also provide a great bank of resources for teachers.
Resources are browsed in an impressive Flash viewer, and can also be downloaded in .tiff format.
المكتبة الرقمية العالمية ليست موقعا إلكترونيا عاديا بقدر ما هي أرشيف فريد يتضمن مجموعة من المراجع والوثائق والمخطوطات النفيسة التي تعود إلى فترات تاريخية مختلفة وتساهم فيها جهات عالمية عدة.
ومن بين ما ستوفره المكتبة الرقمية التي اطلقتها من باريس منظمة اليونسكو بالتعاون مع مكتبة الكونغرس وجهات عالمية أخرى، مخطوطات صينية قديمة وأخرى عربية وإسلامية إضافة الى وثائق تاريخية من أميركا وأوروبا وغيرها من بقاع العالم.
وتتيح المكتبة لمستخدميها من القراء والدارسين والمهتمين الاطلاع على كنوز العالم المعرفية والثقافية عبر هذا الإرشيف الإلكتروني الذي يتضمن مقتنيات أكثر من 30 مؤسسة عالمية.
ويهدف هذا المشروع الكبير الى توسيع حجم الاطلاع على المنتج الثقافي والمعرفي الكوني عبر الوسيلة التي يتسع انتشارها واستخدامها في ارجاء المعمورة اي الشبكة الإلكترونية التي تصدرت عالم المعلومات وأنهت هيمنة الوسائل التقليدية. الأمر الذي يسهم في ردم الهوة الحضارية بين أطراف العالم، ويعمق التفاهم الانساني ويصبح أداة تعليم وبحث نادرة.
تفاعل الثقافات
واعتبر جيمس بيلينجتون مدير مكتبة الكونغرس، الذي يقف وراء فكرة المكتبة العالمية، في تصريح للصحافة إن إطلاق المكتبة "سبيل لتحفيز الناس على التفكر في تفاعل الثقافات، وهو ما نأمل أن يعزز التفاهم والرغبة بالاطلاع على المنجزات الثقافية على الصعيد الإنساني".
وستتضمن المكتبة نفائس المراجع بما في ذلك ارشيف مكتبة الكونغرس، التي تأسست عام 1800، ومواد من مختلف أنحاء العالم منها وثائق ومقتينات من الجهات المشاركة مثل مكتبة الاسكندرية، التي ساهمت بوضع أسس هذا الصرح الثقافي الإلكتروني.
ومن الجهات المساهمة أيضا المكتبة الوطنية العراقية ودار الكتب والمحفوظات المصرية، إضافة الى جهات ثقافية ومكتبات من السعودية وقطر والمغرب، ومن دول أخرى بينها بريطانيا وفرنسا وروسيا والبرازيل والصين واليابان وغيرها.
وكان القائمون على المشروع، الذي بدأ التفكير فيه عام 2005، الدعوة الى المكتبات والمتاحف ومكتبات الإرشيف والمعاهد ذات الصلة التي ترغب بالمشاركة في مجموعاتها من الوثائق والبحوث للمشاركة في خزائن المكتبة الإلكترونية، لتصبح أداة واسعة للبحث والتعليم.
ومن أهم المستفيدين من المشروع الجديد، الذي يمكن استخدام محتوياته مجانا، الدارسون والأكاديميون وغيرهم من المهتمين بالاطلاع على ما أنتجته وتنتجه البشرية من معرفة.
سبع لغات بينها العربية
ويمكّن الإرشيف الإلكتروني الضخم مستخدميه بالوصول إلى مخطوطات ووثائق تاريخية وخرائط ومطبوعات وارشيف موسيقي وآخر للصور وملفات بسبع لغات هي اللغات المستخدمة في الأمم المتحدة.
ومن الوثائق الأميركية التي توفرها المكتبة: إعلان الاستقلال والدستور الأميركي وصور الحرب الأهلية وإعلان إلغاء العبودية إضافة الى وثائق الهجرة والتجنس لمشاهير أميركيين.
ويمكن إجراء البحث داخل موقع المكتبة الرقمية باللغات السبع: الإنكليزية والعربية والصينية والفرنسية والروسية والاسبانية والبرتغالية.
وبذلك تنضم هذه المكتبة الرقمية الى موقعين للإرشيف المكتبي أهمها موقع جوجل للكتب الذي بدأ خدماته عام 2004، والمكتبة الأوروبية (يوربينا) التي أطلقها الاتحاد الاوروبي في نوفمبر/ تشرين الأول 2008.
وتأمل اليونسكو أن تساهم هذه المكتبة في إرساء الاهتمام بالثقافات الأخرى ومد جسور أكثر بين الشعوب وتقريبها من بعضها، وتقليص الفجوة بين الأغنياء والفقراء، عن طريق تسخير ثورة المعلومات والاتصالات لخدمة الإنسانية.

Panasonic said today that a series of high-digital camera “LUMIX G,” won a prestigious international award for the category of best design. It won the Panasonic global leader in high technology with innovative design won the Press Association of the imaging techniques (Teppa) for the category of “best in innovative design of the European continent for the year 2009.”

إنسان آلي صيني لأغراض الإغاثة Chinese Robot

A "robot for disaster relief, rescue and dangerous operations" independently developed by China successfully completed a simulated rubble search and rescue maneuver in Beijing recently.

This means that the difficulty that many countries face of quickly obtaining detailed disaster information after a major earthquake is no longer a problem in China.

This "Robot" is a key project in the National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), and was jointly undertaken by the State Key Laboratory of Robotics of Shenyang Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Earthquake Response Support Service (NERSS).

During the simulated maneuver at the National Earthquake Rescue Emergency Training Base on May 12, the robot, which is in the 40-kilogram class and has a rotary wing, successfully completed a series of test tasks, including unmanned take-off, hovering, flight patch point tracking, information collection in extremely low altitude flying and unmanned landing. The robot also quickly collected information and transmitted real-time video images of the earthquake disaster area.

AMD's upcoming six-core Istanbul processor, slated to arrive in early 2009 got pictured earlier today. The chip manufacturer plans to switch to the SOI (silicon-on-insulator) 45-nanometer process as of this summer and the first parts to hit the market in the second quarter will be the Deneb-based processors.

Advanced Micro Devices detailed on the fact that the Deneb silicon will be a direct shrink of the Agena micro-architecture. On the server side, the Barcelona silicon will undergo the same 45-nanometer SOI process and will transform into the upcoming Shanghai.

The Istanbul processor is slated for mass-availability sometime in early 2009 and will directly compete with Intel's six-core Dunnington chip. According to the die-shot, the new AMD chip will feature 6 MB of L3 cache shared among all the cores.

Each core, however, will come with 512 KB of L2 cache. It is expected to come with either DDR2 or DDR3 support, depending on the CPU socket. While the backwards-compatible AM2+ chip will feature DDR2 support, the upcoming AM3 version will only work with DDR3.

According to chip architect Hans de Vries, AMD could take advantage of the chip's small core size, as two 45-nanometer cores would only take up 30 square millimeters (the 256 Kb of L1 cache included). This is more than Intel could cram into the Nehalem silicon, given the fact that a single core with its 256 Kb of L1 cache also takes up 30 square millimeters.

De Vries also alleged that the final die size for the Istanbul chip could occupy 300 square millimeters or even less. At the same time, the Dunnington silicon is expected to reach about 700 square millimeters, which means that AMD could compete with two cores against a single Intel core with Simultaneous Multi-Threading technology.

"Istanbul could be at or just below 300 mm2. Istanbul/Sao Paulo should become a mass market 32nm device so it's not a bad idea in terms of risk reduction to develop them as server/workstation chips at 45nm", claimed Hans De Vries

Indian designers have announced plans to launch a laptop that will cost an astonishing $10 (500 Rupees).

Here’s a good news for people of India, cause the Indian government will soon release their $10 laptop known as the Sakshat, though the price itself has gone up to $20. Unfortunately, there’s still no published image of the thing, or information about the screen size, RAM or processor, but from what I heard the system will include 2GB of storage, WiFi, Ethernet and 2 watts of power consumption. IdeaPad S10 is not just mini netbook !

Faster than its mini-notebook brethren, the Lenovo S10 offers enough perks to make it a top pick for serious mobility.
Lenovo keeps thinking small. Recently the company delivered slim ultraportables such as the ThinkPad X200 and IdeaPad U110. Now it's jumping into the mini-notebook scene with the impressive IdeaPad S10. Despite its "mini" status, the S10 manages to house some big-boy features.

The S10's tiny, 9.8-by-7.3-by-0.9-inch frame is roughly the size of Acer's Aspire One. But while the Aspire One's screen measures only 8.9 inches, the S10 offers a relatively roomy 10.2-inch, 1024-by-600-resolution display. It's crisp and easily viewable at various angles, even though it isn't necessarily the brightest screen around.

This micro machine also houses the largest hard drive we've seen on a mini-notebook to date: Our model came with a 5400-rpm, 160GB platter-based hard disk. That's more than enough storage to accommodate Windows XP Home and the unit's minimal preinstalled software. The hard drive, though, is the most likely reason the S10 weighs a somewhat hefty 3.6 pounds--almost as much as a ThinkPad X200.

More impressive is how this model performs under pressure. The S10 has the same 1.6-GHz Intel Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM as most of the other mini-notebooks we've seen (such as the Acer Aspire One and Asus Eee 1000H 80G XP), yet it beats them all in performance. The IdeaPad S10 earned a score of 41 on the PC World Test Center's WorldBench 6 suite; it's hardly a speed demon, but it's fairly fast when you consider that the nearest competitor, with the same guts, received only a 37.

The S10 falls short in battery life, though. Its three-cell battery lasts only 2.5 hours before giving out. Although it does a little better than Acer's Aspire One, both lag behind other Atom-based mini-notebooks we've recently tested.

Even though this model's good-size keyboard doesn't match the luxurious tactile response of a ThinkPad, the S10's keys deliver one of the better experiences among the mini-notebooks we've seen. Put the S10 side by side with the MSI Wind and Eee 1000H, however, and you'll see that the S10's keys are a little scrunched by comparison. Regrettably, the mouse buttons are the clacky, tacky type; each button sinks too much and feels a little too loose.

The S10's speaker fares no better than those on most mini-notebooks: It delivers substandard sound that's barely audible since the maximum audio setting is fairly low. That's a slight disappointment since this model's sizable hard drive and satisfactory screen make it a good potential video and music player.

Lenovo wins some points for providing a bloat-free machine, and for supplying a handy recovery application, CyberLink OneKey Recovery 6.0. That app allows you to create backups, as well as to set partitions and restore points--a more flexible backup option than simply restoring the PC to factory-fresh condition. Lenovo even goes so far as to place a OneKey panic button at the top of the keyboard. It's a nice touch, and it's a nod to ThinkPad loyalists, who might consider it a "lite" version of the ThinkVantage button.

If you're looking for a big, beefy hard drive and surprisingly sprightly performance from a mini-notebook, the IdeaPad S10 is a solid pick. If the S10's slightly cramped keyboard and loose mouse buttons are deal breakers for you, Asus's Eee 1000H would suit you much better. Though the Eee 1000H has a little more girth, it will definitely get you through your next business trip.
10.2-inch, Atom-powered little wonder. Sadly, there's little of note in the design -- it seems to have more in common with the MSI Wind and the Eee PC than its Lenovo siblings -- but the $399 starting price is certainly pleasing. That model brings 512MB of RAM and a 80GB hard drive, while a $450 version will be available with 1GB of RAM and 160GB of storage, with both being powered by 1.6GHz Atom chipsets. Windows XP will be preloaded initially, but Linpus versions will be available eventually. The display is 1024 x 600 and LED backlit, and the touchpad does multi-touch. Lenovo didn't skimp on the trimmings either, with WiFi, Bluetooth, ExpressCard, 4-in-1 card reader and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. The S10 hits China on September 5th, and will land in the States in early October. A 9-inch version is also in the works for other countries.

جهاز «لينيفو إس10» IdeaPad S10 من نوع دفتر الملاحظات الصغيرة جدا (الميني)، اسرع من شقيقه دفتر الملاحظات الصغير، يقدم جوانب كافية من القدرات، ما يجعله الاختيار الافضل للمتجولين والمسافرين الدائمين. وكانت «لينيفو» تفكر دائما على نطاق ضيق، لكنها قامت اخيرا بطرح اجهزة رشيقة محمولة بوزن خفيف، مثل «ثنك باد إكس 200» و«أيديال باد يو110». والان قفزت الى دفاتر الملاحظات الصغيرة جدا عن طريق «أيديالباد إس10» الفعال جدا. والاخير رغم وضعه وتصنيفه بالصغير جدا، الا انه استطاع ان يتضمن مميزات لا تقوى عليها سوى الاجهزة الكبيرة.
«إس10» الصغير الحجم واطاره الذي بقياس 908 × 7.3 × 9 بوصات هو تقريبا بقياس جهاز «أسباير وان» من «أيسر». ولكن مع ان شاشة الاخير هي بقياس 8.9 بوصة، الا ان شاشة «إس10» واسعة نسبيا وتبلغ 10.2 بوصة. وتبلغ درجة محدوديتها 1024 × 600. وهي واضحة جدا ومرئية من جميع الزوايا، على الرغم من انها ليست بالضرورة من اكثر الشاشات بريقا.

والجهاز الصغير هذا مجهز بأكبر الاقراص الصلبة التي رأيناها في دفاتر الملاحظات حتى اليوم. فالقرص هو بسعة 160 غيغابايت وبسرعة 5400 دورة في الدقيقة. والسعة هذه اكثر من كافية لاستيعاب «ويندوز إكس بي هوم» والبرمجيات القليلة المركبة فيه سلفا. وكبر حجم القرص الصلب هذا، هو السبب ربما في ان الجهاز يزن 3.6 رطل، اي بوزن جهاز «ثنك باد إكس 200».

والاكثر اثارة هو كيفية عمل هذا الطراز تحت ضغط العمل الشديد. فهو مزود بنفس وحدة المعالجة المركزية من طراز «إنتل أتوم» بسرعة 1.6 غيغاهيرتز، وغيغابايت واحد من الذاكرة العشوائية «رام»، كما الحال مع اغلبية دفاتر الملاحظات الاخرى التي رأيناها مثل «أيسر أسباير وان» المذكور سلفا، و«أسيوز ئي 1000إتش 80 جي إكس بي». لكنه يتغلب عليها جميعا على صعيد الاداء. فقد استطاع «إس10» تسجيل 41 في اختبارات «وورلد بينش 6 سويت» التي يشرف عليها مركز «بي سي وورلد تيست سينتر. والاختبارات هذه ليست تظاهرة للسرعة، لكنها سريعة بما فيه الكفاية لدى الاخذ بالاعتبار ان اقرب منافس لهذا الجهاز المتضمن المميزات والصفات ذاتها، سجل 37 نقطة فقط. بيد ان «إس10» تخلف على صعيد عمر البطارية المؤلفة من ثلاث خلايا لكون شحنتها لم تدم سوى 2.5 ساعة. وعلى الرغم من ان الشحنة دامت افضل من بطارية جهاز «أسباير وان»، الا ان بطاريتي الجهازين تخلفتا عن بطاريات دفاتر الملاحظات الصغيرة التي اساسها «أتوم» التي قمنا بتجربتها اخيرا. وعلى الرغم من ان لوحة مفاتيح هذا الطراز الجيدة الحجم لا ترقى الى الاستجابة اللمسية الرائعة التي تشعر بها لدى استخدامك لوحة جهاز «ثنك باد»، الا ان لوحة مفاتيح «إس10» توفر لك تجربة افضل من سائر لوحات الملاحظات الصغيرة التي شاهدناها اخيرا. ولكن ان وضعنا هذا الجهاز جنبا الى جنب مع جهازي «إم إس آي ويند» و«ئي 1000إتش» لتلاحظ ان مفاتيح «إس10» محشورة قليلا على سبيل المقارنة. ومن سوء الحظ ايضا ان ازرار الماوس غير مريحة وتحدث صوتا وقرقعة وتغطس اكثر من اللازم لدى الكبس عليها بحيث تشعر انها مرتخية قليلا.

ومكبر الصوت في الجهاز ليس افضل من تلك الموجودة في اغلبية دفاتر الملاحظات، فهو يطلق صوتا اقل من العادي قليلا الذي بالكاد يسمع، لكون الحد الاقصى المرتفع منه هو منخفض كثيرا. وهذا ما يخيب الامال قليلا لكون القرص الصلب الكبير الموجود داخله وشاشته المعقولة الحجم تجعلانه مشغلا مناسبا للموسيقى وعرض الفيديو.

وتفوز الشركة الصانعة «لينيفو» ببعض النقاط لكونها قدمت جهازا خاليا من المشاكل، وبالتالي تطبيقا مناسبا لاستعادة الوضع الصحيح، الا وهو «سيبرلينك وان كيه ريكفوري 6.0» الذي يتيح لك ايجاد وسائل الدعم، ووضع الحواجز، واعادة ما تلف. وهو خيار دعم اكثر مرونة من اعادة جهاز كومبيوتر «بي سي» الى حالته الطازجة، يوم كان ما يزال بعد في المصنع.

وهكذا اذا كنت تبحث عن قرص صلب كبير واداء جيد من دفتر ملاحظات صغير، عليك بهذا الجهاز. ولكن اذا لم تعجبك لوحة المفاتيح المزدحمة فيه والماوس المرتخي، عليك بجهاز «إي 1000إتش» من «أسوس» الذي هو الافضل لك.

Windows has updated the Live Search Mobile app for Windows Mobile. They've added some features that make it easier to find local businesses and to get maps and directions on mobile phones.

For starters, there's no more fumbling around with your phone trying to enter your exact location. Location detection helps users automatically find their location even on phones without GPS.

They've also added predictive query input to help speed up searches. After entering a few letters, users can browse through previous searches as well as some suggested ones.

There's now an additional perspective to mapping called "Bird's Eye." This view gives a 3D-like view to help you identify places of interest.

The update supports versions of Windows mobile down to Windows Mobile 5. To download the application go to wls.live.com
Discover Card is now offering mobile access for its cardmembers via Discover.com Mobile. The service allows cardmembers to manage their credit card account directly from their mobile phone's browser.

T-Mobile's Android-based G1 handset has all the features of a smartphone but, with a focus on the mobile internet, it seems more akin to Nokia's Internet Tablet devices than as a rival for Apple's iPhone.

Although not available until November, we had the chance to get a quick look at the G1 at T-Mobile's launch event.

The device is similar in size to the iPhone, but heavier at 158 grams, and has a 3.2in touch-driven display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels.

The real novelty of the G1 is the Google-developed Android platform itself. The user interface looks very clean, with the home screen showing just a clock, a phone dialler, Contacts, Browser, Maps, Gmail and a link to T-Mobile's Web'n'Walk service.

Users can customise this home screen by simply moving the elements around with their finger. We found the device very responsive in our brief use of it.

The browser allows you to zoom in and out to view an entire web page or just a small section. In addition, it shares some similarities with Google's Chrome browser, in that users can open multiple web pages which are displayed as tiles within the browser window. Tapping on one with a finger zooms in to that page.

According to T-Mobile, the idea behind the G1 is that it is a web-based communications tool with a Mail application that keeps synchronised with a user's Gmail account, plus instant messaging.

For this reason, the device has a Qwerty keypad, revealed by swinging the screen out in an arc. Another unusual feature is that the G1 has a miniature trackball, akin to that of RIM's Blackberry Pearl, in the middle of the buttons beneath the screen.

Because Android is also designed as an 'open' platform, users will be able to download extra applications to the G1 from an online channel called Android Market.

Although available initially on a consumer tariff, T-Mobile's head of internet and entertainment Richard Warmsley said that there is no reason why it could not be used for business purposes.

He said he expected to see applications to link the G1 and other Android-based phones with Microsoft Exchange email systems before too long.

The T-Mobile G1 has HSDPA up to 7.2Mbit/s and Wi-Fi for fast browsing, and also has built-in GPS supported by the latest version of Google Maps.

One special feature that we did not get to see is the Digital Compass, which T-Mobile said works with Google Street View to give a 3D representation of the street you are on if you tilt the phone up.

Lusty lovelorn loners looking for love are likely to push revenues from mobile dating and chatroom services past the $1bn mark by 2010, according to a new report by Juniper Research.

The research firm estimates that users of such services are set to soar to 260m in 2012, substantially up from the current tally of 40m.The report points to strong demand in both developed and emerging markets, including more than 60m users in the Indian sub-continent, with the largest mobile dating markets being Japan and India.

Report author, Dr Windsor Holden, commented, “Major brands such as Match.com and Webdate have recognised that customers are willing to pay a mobility premium for 24/7 access to these services and are increasing deploying mobile applications to complement and enhance their existing offerings.”Holden added that the sector was becoming increasingly attractive to start-ups looking to launch cross-platform services, with the increasing proliferation of 3G handsets allowing companies to offer converged services at the outset. “Companies which embrace such a strategy - such as Flirtomatic - are experiencing significantly higher levels of traffic from their WAP users than from their users on the fixed internet,” Holden noted.

Despite the huge rise in traffic, the report cautions that usage was being held back by pricey and often confusing data pricing, with prepaid customers being put off by high data charges

Some experts believe that the rise in mobile dating is due to the growing popularity of online dating. Analyst Brent Iadarola of Frost & Sullivan said, "I think people are more comfortable with online dating, and it's generally been accepted, the comfort people have with online dating in the wired world is now translating to the mobile world." Others believe it is all about choice, as Joe Brennan Jr., vice president of Webdate says, "It's about giving people a choice. They don't have to date on their computer. They can date on their handset, it's all about letting people decide what path is best for them."

Drawbacks
Some avoid these services for fear that the technology could be used to electronically harass users.Another issue is "asymmetry of interests", i.e. attractive member receives excessive attentions and leaves, which may result in deterioration of membership. 3G is the third generation of tele standards and technology for mobile networking, superseding 2.5G. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the IMT-2000.

3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Additional features also include HSPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver speeds up to 14.4 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink.

Unlike IEEE 802.11 networks, which are commonly called Wi-Fi or WLAN networks, 3G networks are wide-area cellular telephone networks that evolved to incorporate high-speed Internet access and video telephony. The standardization of 3G evolution is working in both 3GPP and 3GPP2. The corresponding specifications of 3GPP and 3GPP2 evolutions are named as LTE and UMB, respectively. Development on UMB has been cancelled by Qualcomm as of November 2008. 3G evolution uses partly beyond 3G technologies to enhance the performance and to make a smooth migration path.

There are several different paths from 2G to 3G. In Europe the main path starts from GSM when GPRS is added to a system. From this point it is possible to go to the UMTS system. In North America the system evolution will start from Time division multiple access (TDMA), change to Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) and then to UMTS.

In Japan, two 3G standards are used: W-CDMA used by NTT DoCoMo (FOMA, compatible with UMTS) and SoftBank Mobile (UMTS), and CDMA2000, used by KDDI. Transition for market purposes to 3G was completed in Japan in 2006.

The first introduction of 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) technology in the Caribbean (2007) was done by SETAR in Aruba in December of 2007. The Implementation phase of this network was carried out by Alcatel-Lucent. SETAR had also implemented a 3G network based on CDMA 1X EV-DO in April of 2007.

Not just broadband internet can be exploted from multi megabit speeds. Video calling and VOIP. HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access) has capabilities of bringing 14.4 Mbit/s downstream, this is faster than most standard lines, and even some in cities in well developed areas. Not to mention capabilities of 5.8Mbit/s uplink that is more than ten times standard ADSL, And almost seven times the leading cable provider; Virgin Media.

There are now around 400 3G and HSDPA networks around the world in a quarter of the worlds countries. The migration of global subscribers to 3G has passed 15%, and in countries where 3G has been launched, the migration rate is over 35% by the end of 2008. Many operators have launched low cost or fixed rate data plans for 3G data use which has increased usage and lowered costs. At the launch of 3.5G HSDPA, in many markets this technology is provided as a portable "broadband" modem connection for laptop and even desktop computer users and priced at the low end of broadband pricing. 3G data is however expensive when roaming, with the average cost per megabyte is still in the £5.00/mb range. It would be hard to use many megabytes due to the undeveloped speeds that many networks provide.

In the UK the mobile network 3 (Three) boasts that 90% of the UKs population is covered with 3G, and 99% with the standard talk and text network (2G/2.5G/EDGE)

As anticipated, if stationary, or walking slowly you can expect a minimum of 2Mbit/s. but if in a car doing average city speeds, this falls to 348kbit/s. 3G networks in Britain offer a variety of packages. Going up from 1.8Mbit/s on networks such as T-Mobile and right up as far as 7.2Mbit/s; the same speed as a fixed line within a few hundred metres from its exchange is possible in urban areas of London taking the whole concept of fast easy mobile broadband upto a whole new level. The packages they offer however cannot give you that sustained 7.2Mbit/s, a typical 3GB (3072megabytes) plan costs between £15 and £20 a month. Three is offering 15GB for a record breaking £30 a month, or £15 if you have a contract with them already. Three however does not give such headline speeds as Vodafone.

3G is still in its early years, high prices are to be anticipated because of high fees for frequency licencing and the sheer cost of employing dozens and dozens of teams of engineers to implement a nationwide network and then to maintain it.

A 4G network is in the pipe line, capable of speeds of 100Mbit/s while moving and 1Gbit/s stationary. This however will not see the light of day until at least four, or even eight years time when they have the right equipment to use it. By that stage, bandwidth will be all around us to take advantage of.

Implementation and history
The first pre-commercial 3G network was launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan branded FOMA, in May 2001 on a pre-release of W-CDMA-GA3Y technology. The first commercial launch of 3G was also by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on October 1, 2001. The second network to go commercially live was by SK Telecom in South Korea on the 1xEV-DO technology in January 2002. By May 2002 the second South Korean 3G network was by KTF on EV-DO and thus the Koreans were the first to see competition among 3G operators.

The first European pre-commercial network was at the Isle of Man by Manx Telecom, the operator owned by British Telecom, and the first commercial network in Europe was opened for business by Telenor in December 2001 with no commercial handsets and thus no paying customers. These were both on the W-CDMA technology.

The first commercial United States 3G network was by Monet Mobile Networks, on CDMA2000 1x EV-DO technology, but this network provider later shut down operations. The second 3G network operator in the USA was Verizon Wireless in October 2003 also on CDMA2000 1x EV-DO, and this network has grown strongly since then.

The first pre-commercial demonstration network in the southern hemisphere was built in Adelaide, South Australia by m.Net Corporation in February 2002 using UMTS on 2100 MHz. This was a demonstration network for the 2002 IT World Congress. The first commercial 3G network was launched by Hutchison Telecommunications branded as Three in April 2003.

In December 2007, 190 3G networks were operating in 40 countries and 154 HSDPA networks were operating in 71 countries, according to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA). In Asia, Europe, Canada and the USA, telecommunication companies use W-CDMA technology with the support of around 100 terminal designs to operate 3G mobile networks.

In Europe, mass market commercial 3G services were introduced starting in March 2003 by 3 (Part of Hutchison Whampoa) in the UK and Italy. The European Union Council suggested that the 3G operators should cover 80% of the European national populations by the end of 2005.

Roll-out of 3G networks was delayed in some countries by the enormous costs of additional spectrum licensing fees. (See Telecoms crash.) In many countries, 3G networks do not use the same radio frequencies as 2G, so mobile operators must build entirely new networks and license entirely new frequencies; an exception is the United States where carriers operate 3G service in the same frequencies as other services. The license fees in some European countries were particularly high, bolstered by government auctions of a limited number of licenses and sealed bid auctions, and initial excitement over 3G's potential. Other delays were due to the expenses of upgrading equipment for the new systems.

By June 2007 the 200 millionth 3G subscriber had been connected. Out of 3 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide this is only 6.7%. In the countries where 3G was launched first - Japan and South Korea - 3G penetration is over 70%[2]. In Europe the leading country is Italy with a third of its subscribers migrated to 3G. Other leading countries by 3G migration include UK, Austria, Australia and Singapore at the 20% migration level. A confusing statistic is counting CDMA 2000 1x RTT customers as if they were 3G customers. If using this oft-disputed definition, then the total 3G subscriber base would be 475 million at June 2007 and 15.8% of all subscribers worldwide.

Still several major countries such as Indonesia have not awarded 3G licenses and customers await 3G services. China has been delaying its decisions on 3G for many years, partly hoping to have the Chinese 3G standard, TD-SCDMA, to mature for commercial production. Finally in January 2009, Ministry of industry and Information Technology of China has awarded licenses of all three standards，TD-SCDMA to China Mobile, WCDMA to China Unicom and CDMA2000 to China Telecom.

In November 2008, Turkey has auctioned four IMT 2000/UMTS standard 3G licenses with 45, 40, 35 and 25 MHz top frequencies. Turkcell has won the 45MHz band with its €358 million offer followed by Vodafone and Avea leasing the 40 and 35MHz frequencies respectively for 20 years. The 25MHz top frequency license remains to be auctioned.

China announced in May 2008, that the telecoms sector was re-organized and three 3G networks would be allocated so that the largest mobile operator, China Mobile, would retain its GSM customer base and launch 3G onto the Chinese standard, TD-SCDMA. China Unicom would retain its GSM customer base but relinquish its CDMA2000 customer base, and launch 3G on the globally leading WCDMA (UMTS) standard. The CDMA2000 customers of China Unicom would go to China Telecom, which would then launch 3G on the CDMA 1x EV-DO standard. This means that China will have all three main cellular technology 3G standards in commercial use.

The first African use of 3G technology was a 3G videocall made in Johannesburg on the Vodacom network in November 2004. The first commercial launch of 3G in Africa was by EMTEL in Mauritius on the W-CDMA standard. In north African Morocco in late March 2006, a 3G service was provided by the new company Wana.

Rogers Wireless began implementing 3G HSDPA services in eastern Canada early 2007 in the form of Rogers Vision. Fido Solutions and Rogers Wireless now offer 3G service in most urban centres.

UMTS terminals
The technical complexities of a 3G phone or handset depends on its need to roam onto legacy 2G networks. In the first country, Japan, there was no need to include roaming capabilities to older networks such as GSM, so 3G phones were small and lightweight. In most other countries, the manufacturers and network operators wanted multi-mode 3G phones which would operate on 3G and 2G networks (e.g., W-CDMA and GSM), which added to the complexity, size, weight, and cost of the handset. As a result, early European W-CDMA phones were significantly larger and heavier than comparable Japanese W-CDMA phones.

Japan's Vodafone KK experienced a great deal of trouble with these differences when its UK-based parent, Vodafone, insisted the Japanese subsidiary use standard Vodafone handsets. Japanese customers who were accustomed to smaller handsets were suddenly required to switch to European handsets that were much bulkier and considered unfashionable by Japanese consumers. During this conversion, Vodafone KK lost 6 customers for every 4 that migrated to 3G. Soon thereafter, Vodafone sold the subsidiary which is now known as SoftBank Mobile.

The general trend to smaller and smaller phones seems to have paused, perhaps even turned, with the capability of large-screen phones to provide more video, gaming and internet use on the 3G networks, and further fuelled by the appeal of the Apple iPhone.

Speed
The ITU has not provided a clear definition of the speeds users can expect from 3G equipment or providers. Thus users sold 3G service may not be able to point to a standard and say that the speeds it specifies are not being met. While stating in commentary that "it is expected that IMT-2000 will provide higher transmission rates: a minimum speed of 2Mbit/s and maximum of 14.4Mbit/s for stationary users, and 348 [sic] kbit/s in a moving vehicle,"[3] the ITU does not actually clearly specify minimum or average speeds or what modes of the interfaces qualify as 3G, so various speeds are sold as 3G intended to meet customers expectations of broadband speed. It is often suggested by industry sources that 3G can be expected to provide 384 kbit/s at or below pedestrian speeds, but only 128 kbit/s in a moving car. While EDGE is part of the 3G standard, some phones report EDGE and 3G network availability as separate things.

Network standardization
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) defined the demands for 3G mobile networks with the IMT-2000 standard. An organization called 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has continued that work by defining a mobile system that fulfills the IMT-2000 standard. This system is called Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

Advantages of a layered network architecture
Unlike GSM, UMTS is based on layered services. At the top is the services layer, which provides fast deployment of services and centralized location. In the middle is the control layer, which helps upgrading procedures and allows the capacity of the network to be dynamically allocated. At the bottom is the connectivity layer where any transmission technology can be used and the voice traffic will transfer over ATM/AAL2 or IP/RTP.

3G evolution (pre-4G)
Evolution from 2G to 3G
2G networks were built mainly for voice data and slow transmission. Due to rapid changes in user expectation, they do not meet today's wireless needs. Evolution from 2G to 3G can be sub-divided into following phases:

2G to 2.5G
2.5G to 2.75G
2.75G to 3G

From 2G to 2.5G (GPRS)
The first major step in the evolution to 3G occurred with the introduction of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). So the cellular services combined with GPRS became 2.5G.

GPRS could provide data rates from 56 kbit/s up to 114 kbit/s. It can be used for services such as Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) access, Short Message Service (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), and for Internet communication services such as email and World Wide Web access. GPRS data transfer is typically charged per megabyte of traffic transferred, while data communication via traditional circuit switching is billed per minute of connection time, independent of whether the user actually is utilizing the capacity or is in an idle state.

GPRS is a best-effort packet switched service, as opposed to circuit switching, where a certain Quality of Service (QoS) is guaranteed during the connection for non-mobile users. It provides moderate speed data transfer, by using unused Time division multiple access (TDMA) channels. Originally there was some thought to extend GPRS to cover other standards, but instead those networks are being converted to use the GSM standard, so that GSM is the only kind of network where GPRS is in use. GPRS is integrated into GSM Release 97 and newer releases. It was originally standardized by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), but now by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

From 2.5G to 2.75G
GPRS networks evolved to EDGE networks with the introduction of 8PSK encoding. Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS), or IMT Single Carrier (IMT-SC) is a backward-compatible digital mobile phone technology that allows improved data transmission rates, as an extension on top of standard GSM. EDGE can be considered a 3G radio technology and is part of ITU's 3G definition, but is most frequently referred to as 2.75G. EDGE was deployed on GSM networks beginning in 2003—initially by Cingular (now AT&T) in the United States.

EDGE is standardized by 3GPP as part of the GSM family, and it is an upgrade that provides a potential three-fold increase in capacity of GSM/GPRS networks. The specification achieves higher data-rates by switching to more sophisticated methods of coding (8PSK), within existing GSM timeslots.

EDGE can be used for any packet switched application, such as an Internet, video and other multimedia.

From 2.75G to 3G
From EDGE networks the introduction of UMTS networks and technology is called pure 3G.

Migrating from GPRS to UMTS

The functionality of MSC and SGSN changes when going to UMTS. In a GSM system the MSC handles all the circuit switched operations like connecting A- and B-subscriber through the network. SGSN handles all the packet switched operations and transfers all the data in the network. In UMTS the Media gateway (MGW) take care of all data transfer in both circuit and packet switched networks. MSC and SGSN control MGW operations. The nodes are renamed to MSC-server and GSN-server.

Security
3G networks offer a greater degree of security than 2G predecessors. By allowing the UE to authenticate the network it is attaching to, the user can be sure the network is the intended one and not an impersonator. 3G networks use the KASUMI block crypto instead of the older A5/1 stream cipher. However, a number of serious weaknesses in the KASUMI cipher have been identified.

In addition to the 3G network infrastructure security, end to end security is offered when application frameworks such as IMS are accessed, although this is not strictly a 3G property.

Issues
Although 3G was successfully introduced to users across the world, some issues are debated by 3G providers and users:

Expensive input fees for the 3G service licenses
Numerous differences in the licensing terms
Large amount of debt currently sustained by many telecommunication companies, which makes it a challenge to build the necessary infrastructure for 3G
Lack of member state support for financially troubled operators
Expense of 3G phones
Lack of buy-in by 2G mobile users for the new 3G wireless services
Lack of coverage, because it is still a new service
High prices of 3G mobile services in some countries, including Internet access Current lack of user need for 3G voice and data services in a hand-held device
3G is actually an acronym for third generation, which means that there had been first generation and second generation mobile phones already. How are these three generations of mobile phones determined? Most probably, the first generation mobile phones are those that are simply built to make calling and messaging more convenient through a wireless phone that you can take anywhere, hence the term "mobile." The second generation mobile phones, on the other hand, have additional features like entertainment and multimedia messaging. When mobile phones started inculcating computer technologies in their systems, that's the time when mobile phones went 3G. These computer technologies inculcated in 3G mobile include, but are not limited to, video calling and mobile phone access to the World Wide Web.

Another characteristic of 3G mobile is that it is less expensive than 2G systems but it has a wider network of clients. This is made possible by 3G's capability to send out about 384 kilobytes to up to 2 megabytes of data per second. Therefore, with 3G, you get a speedier system, which, if you liken the situation to home Internet connection, is like upgrading from a dial up system to a broadband connection.

How Did 3G Mobile Spring Forth?
3G mobile technology is said to have first started in the year 2001, in Japan. This is where the pioneer of WCDMA technologies was launched, but it is not a commercial one just yet. The commercial 3G technology just came 4 months after, also in Japan. By end of the year, 3G also started in Europe, through Manx Telecom's Isle of Man.

The following year, South Korea followed with their very own CDMA 2000 1 x EV-DO system. Soon thereafter, South Korea came up with another EV-DO technology, which gave birth to competition in the 3G market.

That same year 2002, 3G was first witnessed in Australia through m. Net Corporation. It made use of UMTS technology for the Information Technology World Congress in 2002.

What is CDMA?

Code division multiple access
Code division multiple access (CDMA) is a channel access method utilized by various radio communication technologies. It should not be confused with the mobile phone standards called cdmaOne and CDMA2000 (which are often referred to as simply "CDMA"), this uses CDMA as an underlying channel access methods.

One of the basic concepts in data communication is the idea of allowing several transmitters to send information simultaneously over a single communication channel. This allows several users to share a bandwidth of frequencies. This concept is called multiplexing. CDMA employs spread-spectrum technology and a special coding scheme (where each transmitter is assigned a code) to allow multiple users to be multiplexed over the same physical channel. By contrast, time division multiple access (TDMA) divides access by time, while frequency-division multiple access (FDMA) divides it by frequency. CDMA is a form of "spread-spectrum" signaling, since the modulated coded signal has a much higher data bandwidth than the data being communicated.

An analogy to the problem of multiple access is a room (channel) in which people wish to communicate with each other. To avoid confusion, people could take turns speaking (time division), speak at different pitches (frequency division), or speak in different languages (code division). CDMA is analogous to the last example where people speaking the same language can understand each other, but not other people. Similarly, in radio CDMA, each group of users is given a shared code. Many codes occupy the same channel, but only users associated with a particular code can understand each other.

Uses
1.One of the early applications for code division multiplexing—predating, and distinct from cdmaOne—is in GPS.
2.The Qualcomm standard IS-95, marketed as cdmaOne.
3.The Qualcomm standard IS-2000, known as CDMA2000. This standard is used by several mobile phone companies, including the Globalstar satellite phone network.
4.CDMA has been used in the OmniTRACS satellite system for transportation logistics.

Technical details
CDMA is a spread spectrum multiple access technique. In CDMA a locally generated code runs at a much higher rate than the data to be transmitted. Data for transmission is simply logically XOR (exclusive OR) added with the faster code. The figure shows how spread spectrum signal is generated. The data signal with pulse duration of Tb is XOR added with the code signal with pulse duration of Tc. (Note: bandwidth is proportional to 1 / T where T = bit time) Therefore, the bandwidth of the data signal is 1 / Tb and the bandwidth of the spread spectrum signal is 1 / Tc. Since Tc is much smaller than Tb, the bandwidth of the spread spectrum signal is much larger than the bandwidth of the original signal.

Each user in a CDMA system uses a different code to modulate their signal. Choosing the codes used to modulate the signal is very important in the performance of CDMA systems. The best performance will occur when there is good separation between the signal of a desired user and the signals of other users. The separation of the signals is made by correlating the received signal with the locally generated code of the desired user. If the signal matches the desired user's code then the correlation function will be high and the system can extract that signal. If the desired user's code has nothing in common with the signal the correlation should be as close to zero as possible (thus eliminating the signal); this is referred to as cross correlation. If the code is correlated with the signal at any time offset other than zero, the correlation should be as close to zero as possible. This is referred to as auto-correlation and is used to reject multi-path interference.

In general, CDMA belongs to two basic categories: synchronous (orthogonal codes) and asynchronous (pseudorandom codes).
Code Division Multiplexing (Synchronous CDMA)
Synchronous CDMA exploits mathematical properties of orthogonality between vectors representing the data strings. For example, binary string "1011" is represented by the vector (1, 0, 1, 1). Vectors can be multiplied by taking their dot product, by summing the products of their respective components. If the dot product is zero, the two vectors are said to be orthogonal to each other. (Note: If u=(a,b) and v=(c,d), the dot product u.v = a*c + b*d) Some properties of the dot product help to understand how W-CDMA works. If vectors a and b are orthogonal, then

Each user in synchronous CDMA uses an orthogonal codes to modulate their signal. An example of four mutually orthogonal digital signals is shown in the figure. Orthogonal codes have a cross-correlation equal to zero; in other words, they do not interfere with each other. In the case of IS-95 64 bit Walsh codes are used to encode the signal to separate different users. Since each of the 64 Walsh codes are orthogonal to one another, the signals are channelized into 64 orthogonal signals. The following example demonstrates how each users signal can be encoded and decoded.

Example
Start with a set of vectors that are mutually orthogonal. (Although mutual orthogonality is the only condition, these vectors are usually constructed for ease of decoding, for example columns or rows from Walsh matrices.) An example of orthogonal functions is shown in the picture on the left. These vectors will be assigned to individual users and are called the "code", "chipping code" or "chip code". In the interest of brevity, the rest of this example uses codes (v) with only 2 digits.

If the data to be transmitted is a digital zero, then the actual bits transmitted will be –v, and if the data to be transmitted is a digital one, then the actual bits transmitted will be v. For example, if v=(1,–1), and the data that the user wishes to transmit is (1, 0, 1, 1) this would correspond to (v, –v, v, v) which is then constructed in binary as ((1,–1),(–1,1),(1,–1),(1,–1)). For the purposes of this article, we call this constructed vector the transmitted vector.

Each sender has a different, unique vector v chosen from that set, but the construction method of the transmitted vector is identical.

Now, due to physical properties of interference, if two signals at a point are in phase, they add to give twice the amplitude of each signal, but if they are out of phase, they "subtract" and give a signal that is the difference of the amplitudes. Digitally, this behaviour can be modelled by the addition of the transmission vectors, component by component.

If sender0 has code (1,–1) and data (1,0,1,1), and sender1 has code (1,1) and data (0,0,1,1), and both senders transmit simultaneously, then this table describes the coding steps:

Because signal0 and signal1 are transmitted at the same time into the air, they add to produce the raw signal:

This raw signal is called an interference pattern. The receiver then extracts an intelligible signal for any known sender by combining the sender's code with the interference pattern, the receiver combines it with the codes of the senders. The following table explains how this works and shows that the signals do not interfer with one another:

Further, after decoding, all values greater than 0 are interpreted as 1 while all values less than zero are interpreted as 0. For example, after decoding, data0 is (2,–2,2,2), but the receiver interprets this as (1,0,1,1).

We can also consider what would happen if a receiver tries to decode a signal when the user has not sent any information. Assume signal0=(1,-1,-1,1,1,-1,1,-1) is transmitted alone. The following table shows the decode at the receiver:

When the receiver attempts to decode the signal using sender1’s code, the data is all zeros, therefore the cross correlation is equal to zero and it is clear that sender1 did not transmit any data.

Asynchronous CDMA
The previous example of orthogonal Walsh sequences describes how 2 users can be multiplexed together in a synchronous system, a technique that is commonly referred to as Code Division Multiplexing (CDM). The set of 4 Walsh sequences shown in the figure will afford up to 4 users, and in general, an NxN Walsh matrix can be used to multiplex N users. Multiplexing requires all of the users to be coordinated so that each transmits their assigned sequence v (or the complement, -v) starting at exactly the same time. Thus, this technique finds use in base-to-mobile links, where all of the transmissions originate from the same transmitter and can be perfectly coordinated.

On the other hand, the mobile-to-base links cannot be precisely coordinated, particularly due to the mobility of the handsets, and require a somewhat different approach. Since it is not mathematically possible to create signature sequences that are orthogonal for arbitrarily random starting points, unique "pseudo-random" or "pseudo-noise" (PN) sequences are used in Asynchronous CDMA systems. A PN code is a binary sequence that appears random but can be reproduced in a deterministic manner by intended receivers. These PN codes are used to encode and decode a users signal in Asynchronous CDMA in the same manner as the orthogonal codes in synchrous CDMA (shown in the example above). These PN sequences are statistically uncorrelated, and the sum of a large number of PN sequences results in Multiple Access Interference (MAI) that is approximated by a Gaussian noise process (following the "central limit theorem" in statistics). If all of the users are received with the same power level, then the variance (e.g., the noise power) of the MAI increases in direct proportion to the number of users. In other words, unlike synchronous CDMA, the signals of other users will appear as noise to the signal of interest and interfere slightly with the desired signal in proportion to number of users.

All forms of CDMA use spread spectrum process gain to allow receivers to partially discriminate against unwanted signals. Signals encoded with the specified PN sequence (code) are received, while signals with different codes (or the same code but a different timing offset) appear as wideband noise reduced by the process gain.

Since each user generates MAI, controlling the signal strength is an important issue with CDMA transmitters. A CDM (Synchronous CDMA), TDMA or FDMA receiver can in theory completely reject arbitrarily strong signals using different codes, time slots or frequency channels due to the orthogonality of these systems. This is not true for Asynchronous CDMA; rejection of unwanted signals is only partial. If any or all of the unwanted signals are much stronger than the desired signal, they will overwhelm it. This leads to a general requirement in any Asynchronous CDMA system to approximately match the various signal power levels as seen at the receiver. Advantages of Asynchronous CDMA over other techniquesAsynchronous CDMA's main advantage over CDM (Synchronous CDMA), TDMA and FDMA is that it can use the spectrum more efficiently in mobile telephony applications. (In theory, CDMA, TDMA and FDMA have exactly the same spectral efficiency but practically, each has its own challenges - power control in the case of CDMA, timing in the case of TDMA, and frequency generation/filtering in the case of FDMA.) TDMA systems must carefully synchronize the transmission times of all the users to ensure that they are received in the correct timeslot and do not cause interference. Since this cannot be perfectly controlled in a mobile environment, each timeslot must have a guard-time, which reduces the probability that users will interfere, but decreases the spectral efficiency. Similarly, FDMA systems must use a guard-band between adjacent channels, due to the random doppler shift of the signal spectrum which occurs due to the user's mobility. The guard-bands will reduce the probability that adjacent channels will interfere, but decrease the utilization of the spectrum.

Most importantly, Asynchronous CDMA offers a key advantage in the flexible allocation of resources. There are a fixed number of orthogonal codes, timeslots or frequency bands that can be allocated for CDM, TDMA and FDMA systems, which remain underutilized due to the bursty nature of telephony and packetized data transmissions. There is no strict limit to the number of users that can be supported in an Asynchronous CDMA system, only a practical limit governed by the desired bit error probability, since the SIR (Signal to Interference Ratio) varies inversely with the number of users. In a bursty traffic environment like mobile telephony, the advantage afforded by Asynchronous CDMA is that the performance (bit error rate) is allowed to fluctuate randomly, with an average value determined by the number of users times the percentage of utilization. Suppose there are 2N users that only talk half of the time, then 2N users can be accommodated with the same average bit error probability as N users that talk all of the time. The key difference here is that the bit error probability for N users talking all of the time is constant, whereas it is a random quantity (with the same mean) for 2N users talking half of the time.

In other words, Asynchronous CDMA is ideally suited to a mobile network where large numbers of transmitters each generate a relatively small amount of traffic at irregular intervals. CDM (Synchronous CDMA), TDMA and FDMA systems cannot recover the underutilized resources inherent to bursty traffic due to the fixed number of orthogonal codes, time slots or frequency channels that can be assigned to individual transmitters. For instance, if there are N time slots in a TDMA system and 2N users that talk half of the time, then half of the time there will be more than N users needing to use more than N timeslots. Furthermore, it would require significant overhead to continually allocate and deallocate the orthogonal code, time-slot or frequency channel resources. By comparison, Asynchronous CDMA transmitters simply send when they have something to say, and go off the air when they don't, keeping the same PN signature sequence as long as they are connected to the system.

Spread Spectrum Characteristics of CDMA
Most modulation schemes try to minimize the bandwidth of this signal since bandwidth is a limited resource. However, spread spectrum techniques use a transmission bandwidth that is several orders of magnitude greater then the minimum required signal bandwidth. One of the initial reasons for doing this was military applications including guidance and communication systems. These systems were designed using spread spectrum because of its security and resistance to jamming. Asynchronous CDMA has some level of privacy built in because the signal is spread using a pseudorandom code; this code makes the spread spectrum signals appear random or have noise-like properties. A receiver cannot demodulate this transmission without knowledge of the pseudorandom sequence used to encode the data. CDMA is also resistant to jamming. A jamming signal only has a finite amount of power available to jam the signal. The jammer can either spread its energy over the entire bandwidth of the signal or jam only part of the entire signal.

CDMA can also effectively reject narrowband interference. Since narrowband interference affects only a small portion of the spread spectrum signal, it can easily be removed through notch filtering without much loss of information. Convolution encoding and interleaving can be used to assist in recovering this lost data. CDMA signals are also resistant to multipath fading. Since the spread spectrum signal occupies a large bandwidth only a small portion of this will undergo fading due to multipath at any given time. Like the narrowband interference this will result in only a small loss of data and can be overcome.

Another reason CDMA is resistant to multipath interference is because the delayed versions of the transmitted pseudorandom codes will have poor correlation with the original pseudorandom code, and will thus appear as another user, which is ignored at the receiver. In other words, as long as the multipath channel induces at least one chip of delay, the multipath signals will arrive at the receiver such that they are shifted in time by at least one chip from the intended signal. The correlation properties of the pseudorandom codes are such that this slight delay causes the multipath to appear uncorrelated with the intended signal, and it is thus ignored.

Some CDMA devices use a rake receiver, which exploits multipath delay components to improve the performance of the system. A rake receiver combines the information from several correlators, each one tuned to a different path delay, producing a stronger version of the signal than a simple receiver with a single correlator tuned to the path delay of the strongest signal.

Frequency reuse is the ability to reuse the same radio channel frequency at other cell sites within a cellular system. In the FDMA and TDMA systems frequency planning is an important consideration. The frequencies used in different cells need to be planned carefully in order to ensure that the signals from different cells do not interfere with each other. In a CDMA system the same frequency can be used in every cell because channelization is done using the pseudorandom codes. Reusing the same frequency in every cell eliminates the need for frequency planning in a CDMA system; however, planning of the different pseudorandom sequences must be done to ensure that the received signal from one cell does not correlate with the signal from a nearby cell.

Since adjacent cells use the same frequencies, CDMA systems have the ability to perform soft handoffs. Soft handoffs allow the mobile telephone to communicate simultaneously with two or more cells. The best signal quality is selected until the handoff is complete. This is different than hard handoffs utilized in other cellular systems. In a hard handoff situation, as the mobile telephone approaches a handoff, signal strength may vary abruptly. In contrast, CDMA systems use the soft handoff, which is undetectable and provides a more reliable and higher quality signal.

CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access. It makes use of a unique code system and certain spread spectrum methods so that not just one but many mobile phone users can be compounded or be present in just one physical communication medium or channel. CDMA first began as a communication system devised by England to prevent their German foes from somewhat hacking and blocking their radio transmissions.

What Is GSM?
GSM (Global System for Mobile communications: originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile) is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. Its promoter, the GSM Association, estimates that 80% of the global mobile market uses the standard.GSM is used by over 3 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories. Its ubiquity makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs from its predecessors in that both signaling and speech channels are digital, and thus is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. This has also meant that data communication was easy to build into the system.

The ubiquity of the GSM standard has been an advantage to both consumers (who benefit from the ability to roam and switch carriers without switching phones) and also to network operators (who can choose equipment from any of the many vendors implementing GSM). GSM also pioneered a low-cost (to the network carrier) alternative to voice calls, the Short message service (SMS, also called "text messaging"), which is now supported on other mobile standards as well. Another advantage is that the standard includes one worldwide Emergency telephone number, 112. This makes it easier for international travellers to connect to emergency services without knowing the local emergency number.

Newer versions of the standard were backward-compatible with the original GSM phones. For example, Release '97 of the standard added packet data capabilities, by means of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Release '99 introduced higher speed data transmission using Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).

History
In 1982, the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) created the Groupe Spécial Mobile (GSM) to develop a standard for a mobile telephone system that could be used across Europe. In 1987, a memorandum of understanding was signed by 13 countries to develop a common cellular telephone system across Europe. Finally the system created by SINTEF lead by Torleiv Maseng was selected .

In 1989, GSM responsibility was transferred to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and phase I of the GSM specifications were published in 1990. The first GSM network was launched in 1991 by Radiolinja in Finland with joint technical infrastructure maintenance from Ericsson. By the end of 1993, over a million subscribers were using GSM phone networks being operated by 70 carriers across 48 countries

Technical details
GSM is a cellular network, which means that mobile phones connect to it by searching for cells in the immediate vicinity. GSM networks operate in a number of different frequency ranges (separated into GSM frequency ranges for 2G and UMTS frequency bands for 3G). Most 2G GSM networks operate in the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz bands. Some countries in the Americas (including Canada and the United States) use the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands because the 900 and 1800 MHz frequency bands were already allocated. Most 3G GSM networks in Europe operate in the 2100 MHz frequency band

The rarer 400 and 450 MHz frequency bands are assigned in some countries where these frequencies were previously used for first-generation systems.

GSM-900 uses 890–915 MHz to send information from the mobile station to the base station (uplink) and 935–960 MHz for the other direction (downlink), providing 124 RF channels (channel numbers 1 to 124) spaced at 200 kHz. Duplex spacing of 45 MHz is used. In some countries the GSM-900 band has been extended to cover a larger frequency range. This 'extended GSM', E-GSM, uses 880–915 MHz (uplink) and 925–960 MHz (downlink), adding 50 channels (channel numbers 975 to 1023 and 0) to the original GSM-900 band. Time division multiplexing is used to allow eight full-rate or sixteen half-rate speech channels per radio frequency channel. There are eight radio timeslots (giving eight burst periods) grouped into what is called a TDMA frame. Half rate channels use alternate frames in the same timeslot. The channel data rate for all 8 channels is 270.833 kbit/s, and the frame duration is 4.615 ms.

The transmission power in the handset is limited to a maximum of 2 watts in GSM850/900 and 1 watt in GSM1800/1900.

GSM has used a variety of voice codecs to squeeze 3.1 kHz audio into between 5.6 and 13 kbit/s. Originally, two codecs, named after the types of data channel they were allocated, were used, called Half Rate (5.6 kbit/s) and Full Rate (13 kbit/s). These used a system based upon linear predictive coding (LPC). In addition to being efficient with bitrates, these codecs also made it easier to identify more important parts of the audio, allowing the air interface layer to prioritize and better protect these parts of the signal.

GSM was further enhanced in 1997 with the Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) codec, a 12.2 kbit/s codec that uses a full rate channel. Finally, with the development of UMTS, EFR was refactored into a variable-rate codec called AMR-Narrowband, which is high quality and robust against interference when used on full rate channels, and less robust but still relatively high quality when used in good radio conditions on half-rate channels.

There are five different cell sizes in a GSM network—macro, micro, pico, femto and umbrella cells. The coverage area of each cell varies according to the implementation environment. Macro cells can be regarded as cells where the base station antenna is installed on a mast or a building above average roof top level. Micro cells are cells whose antenna height is under average roof top level; they are typically used in urban areas. Picocells are small cells whose coverage diameter is a few dozen meters; they are mainly used indoors. Femtocells are cells designed for use in residential or small business environments and connect to the service provider’s network via a broadband internet connection. Umbrella cells are used to cover shadowed regions of smaller cells and fill in gaps in coverage between those cells.

Cell horizontal radius varies depending on antenna height, antenna gain and propagation conditions from a couple of hundred meters to several tens of kilometres. The longest distance the GSM specification supports in practical use is 35 kilometres (22 mi). There are also several implementations of the concept of an extended cell, where the cell radius could be double or even more, depending on the antenna system, the type of terrain and the timing advance.

Indoor coverage is also supported by GSM and may be achieved by using an indoor picocell base station, or an indoor repeater with distributed indoor antennas fed through power splitters, to deliver the radio signals from an antenna outdoors to the separate indoor distributed antenna system. These are typically deployed when a lot of call capacity is needed indoors, for example in shopping centers or airports. However, this is not a prerequisite, since indoor coverage is also provided by in-building penetration of the radio signals from nearby cells.

The modulation used in GSM is Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK), a kind of continuous-phase frequency shift keying. In GMSK, the signal to be modulated onto the carrier is first smoothed with a Gaussian low-pass filter prior to being fed to a frequency modulator, which greatly reduces the interference to neighboring channels (adjacent channel interference).

GSM TRANSMITTOR
One of the key features of GSM is the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), commonly known as a SIM card. The SIM is a detachable smart card containing the user's subscription information and phone book. This allows the user to retain his or her information after switching handsets. Alternatively, the user can also change operators while retaining the handset simply by changing the SIM. Some operators will block this by allowing the phone to use only a single SIM, or only a SIM issued by them; this practice is known as SIM locking, and is illegal in some countries.

In Australia, North America and Europe many operators lock the mobiles they sell. This is done because the price of the mobile phone is typically subsidised with revenue from subscriptions, and operators want to try to avoid subsidising competitor's mobiles. A subscriber can usually contact the provider to remove the lock for a fee, utilize private services to remove the lock, or make use of ample software and websites available on the Internet to unlock the handset themselves. While most web sites offer the unlocking for a fee, some do it for free. The locking applies to the handset, identified by its International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, not to the account (which is identified by the SIM card).

In some countries such as Bangladesh, Belgium, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan, all phones are sold unlocked. However, in Belgium, it is unlawful for operators there to offer any form of subsidy on the phone's price. This was also the case in Finland until April 1, 2006, when selling subsidized combinations of handsets and accounts became legal, though operators have to unlock phones free of charge after a certain period (at most 24 months).

GSM security
GSM was designed with a moderate level of security. The system was designed to authenticate the subscriber using a pre-shared key and challenge-response. Communications between the subscriber and the base station can be encrypted. The development of UMTS introduces an optional USIM, that uses a longer authentication key to give greater security, as well as mutually authenticating the network and the user - whereas GSM only authenticates the user to the network (and not vice versa). The security model therefore offers confidentiality and authentication, but limited authorization capabilities, and no non-repudiation. GSM uses several cryptographic algorithms for security. The A5/1 and A5/2 stream ciphers are used for ensuring over-the-air voice privacy. A5/1 was developed first and is a stronger algorithm used within Europe and the United States; A5/2 is weaker and used in other countries. Serious weaknesses have been found in both algorithms: it is possible to break A5/2 in real-time with a ciphertext-only attack, and in February 2008, Pico Computing, Inc revealed its ability and plans to commercialize FPGAs that allow A5/1 to be broken with a rainbow table attack . The system supports multiple algorithms so operators may replace that cipher with a stronger one.
